Michigan: Let's end painful experiments on dogs and cats!

Name of Bill: Queenie's Law

Bill Number: HB 4849

Humane CosmeticsIn 2021, animal testing facilities in Michigan reported using more than 420 dogs in experiments that caused pain and distress. While it is difficult to discern exactly how all the dogs were used in experiments, common uses for dogs include cancer and cardiovascular research and studies of the nervous system and musculoskeletal disorders. They are also a “go-to” species to test drugs and medical devices such as pacemakers.

In Michigan, Queenie’s Law (HB 4849) would prohibit experiments that cause pain and distress to dogs and cats in laboratories. The law is named after a dog who was killed in a Michigan laboratory after undergoing seven months of experiments. The experiments that Queenie was subjected to have been in place since 1991 without yielding any scientific advancements for humans.

Thanks to forward strides in scientific processes such as organ-on-chip technology and computer modeling, painful experiments on dogs and cats are now seen as an archaic, useless, and unethical practice. Let’s end this way of doing things in Michigan and look toward a future where research is humane and human-relevant.

Please support HB 4849, Queenie's Law, to end painful experiments on dogs and cats

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing as a constituent to ask for your support of HB 4849, Queenie's Law, to end painful experiments on dogs and cats in Michigan. This legislation was recently heard in the House Committee on Agriculture. Support of this legislation could save hundreds of dogs and cats from lives of pain and distress and promote modern, humane science.

Queenie's Law is named after a dog who was killed in a Michigan laboratory after being used in painful experiments for seven months. Due to physiological differences between species and the fact that pain and suffering of test subjects can drastically alter research results, painful experiments using dogs and cats simply do not lead to positive health outcomes for humans.

Already, scientists across the country are gathering insights and data used to drive human health initiatives without the use of animals. It makes sense that in order to address the health concerns of today, we must use human-relevant research methods such as organ-on-chip technology, organoids, high-throughput systems, and computational modeling. Relying on human-relevant methods is not only the ethical approach to save animals from lives of torment, but it is the most scientifically valid approach.

Please support the passage of Queenie's Law, HB 4849, to save dogs and cats from painful experiments and accelerate innovative, human-relevant research methods.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
