Let's make cosmetic testing on animals a thing of the past!

Let's make cosmetic testing on animals a thing of the past!

Name of Bill: Crulty Free Cosmetics Act

Bill Number: HB 495

It is 2024. The time to move past archaic animal testing for products like shampoo and mascara is long past due.

Humane CosmeticsCosmetics testing causes unnecessary pain and harm to animals, and alternative testing methods exist that are often cheaper and more accurate predictors for how cosmetics and their ingredients will affect humans. This reality has led 11 states to enact laws to end the sale of cosmetics that were produced using animal testing.

In Ohio, HB 495 would ban, with some exceptions, the sale of cosmetics that have been developed using animal testing. Banning the sale of animal-tested cosmetics is a big step towards reducing the suffering of animals in laboratories because the effect would expand beyond Ohio. As more states take up similar legislation, manufacturers around the country will be forced to re-examine their animal testing practices if they want to stay relevant in the marketplace.

Please support HB 495, to prohibit the sale of cosmetics tested on animals

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing as your constituent to ask for your support of HB 495 to end the sale of cosmetics that are developed using animal testing. Safe and reliable non-animal safety tests have existed for years, and hundreds of brands already sell cosmetics that are cruelty free.

If you are worried that this legislation is anti-business, I assure you it isn't. The Federal Humane Cosmetics Act, which was re-introduced in Congress with the similar purpose of ending animal testing for cosmetics, is supported by the Personal Care Products Council, a trade organization representing 90% of the U.S. cosmetics industry. The federal bill has also been endorsed by more than 350 individual companies, including Unilever and Proctor & Gamble.

Another important point for consideration is that the cosmetics industry already relies heavily on more predictive, non-animal testing methods to evaluate product safety, demonstrating that an end to the use of animals will not negatively impact human health.

Banning the sale of animal-tested products is important because the positive effect will be felt across the entire cosmetics industry. It will lead to long overdue changes regarding manufacturing and development using cruel and unnecessary practices.

Please support HB 495 to bring cosmetic safety testing into the 21st century.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
