Michigan: Help Dogs and Cats Get Adopted After Life in the Laboratory Michigan: Help Dogs and Cats Get Adopted After Life in the Laboratory Name of Bill: Teddy's Law Bill Number: SB 148 & SB 149 / HB 4277 & 4278 In 2021, animal testing facilities in Michigan reported using 560 dogs and 121 cats for research, experiments and teaching. As a matter of routine, most of these animals were likely euthanized once they were no longer of use, even if they would have been suitable adoption candidates. Four pieces of legislation known collectively as “Teddy’s Law,” would require research facilities that no longer have a use for a dog or cat to offer the animal to a rescue or animal shelter for eventual adoption. Additionally, research facilities would need to submit an annual report to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development that includes information about the animals adopted in the preceding year. Healthy animals who were once used in research deserve the opportunity to be adopted into loving homes—this is the least they deserve after a life in the lab. Help us pass Teddy’s Law in Michigan so more lab animals get a chance at a loving home. Calls to Action: Please contact your state representative and urge them to support Teddy's Law. Message Please support "Teddy's Law" to help dogs and cats used in research Dear [Decision Maker], I am writing as a constituent to ask for your support of SB 148 & 149/HB 4277 & 4278, collectively known as "Teddy's Law," to require testing facilities offer up dogs and cats for adoption after they have been used in the lab. There is also an annual reporting requirement. The bills provide an exception for dogs or cats who pose a health or safety risk to the public.Currently, many dogs and cats used in research are routinely euthanized when laboratories no longer need them. This flies in the face of the deep bond that we have developed with these animals and is a particularly cruel ending to a life that knew little more than poking, prodding and testing. "Teddy's Law" will direct laboratories to give their dog and cat test subjects a chance at happier lives beyond the lab. Please support passage of "Teddy's Law" to give these dogs and cats a chance at loving homes. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP]
