It is long past time for an overhaul to the product testing industry. Modern century science has rapidly developed testing methods that have rendered animal testing irrelevant. These new methods, which include human cell-based tests and advanced computer models, are faster, cheaper and better predictors of a human response compared to animal tests. Despite these advancements, product manufacturers and contract testing facilities continue to rely on irrelevant animal testing. In Massachusetts, H.850 and S.1424 would prohibit product manufacturers and contract testing facilities from using animal testing when a validated non-animal test method exists. This legislation will help ensure that products are tested using superior, human-relevant testing strategies as soon as they have been approved for use.
