Testing Cosmetics on Animals Needs to Stop!

Testing Cosmetics on Animals Needs to Stop!

Name of Bill: Prohibiting Cosmetic Animal Tests

Bill Number: H.524

It is 2024. We have robot vacuums, lab-grown meat, driverless cars…and archaic animal testing for products like shampoo and mascara. It is long past time for an overhaul to the cosmetics industry.

Humane CosmeticsNot only does cosmetics testing cause unnecessary pain and harm to animals, but non-animal testing methods exist that are often cheaper and more accurate predictors for how cosmetics and their ingredients will affect humans. This reality has led 11 states (CA, HI, IL, LA, ME, MD, NV, NJ, NY, OR, and VA) and 45 countries to enact cosmetic animal testing and sales bans.

In Vermont, H.524 would prohibit a manufacturer from conducting cosmetic animal testing, with some exceptions. Banning animal testing on cosmetics is a big step toward reducing the suffering of animals in laboratories because the effect would expand beyond Vermont. As more states take up similar legislation, manufacturers around the country will be forced to re-examine their animal testing practices if they want to stay relevant in the marketplace.

Please support H.524, to save animals from cosmetic testing

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to ask for your support of H.524 to prohibit animal testing for cosmetics, with some exceptions. Safe and reliable non-animal safety tests have existed for years, and hundreds of brands already sell cosmetics that are cruelty free. There is simply no excuse to continue using animals for cosmetic testing.

If you are worried that this legislation is anti-business, I assure you it isn't. The Federal Humane Cosmetics Act, which has been re-introduced in Congress with the similar purpose of ending animal testing for cosmetics, has support from the Personal Care Products Council, a trade organization representing 90% of the U.S. cosmetics industry. The federal bill has also been endorsed by more than 400 individual companies, including Unilever and Proctor & Gamble.

Another important point for consideration is that the cosmetics industry already relies heavily on more predictive, non-animal testing methods to evaluate product safety. This demonstrates that an end to the use of animal testing will not negatively impact human health or a company's ability to operate and sell its products.

Please support H.524 to bring cosmetic safety testing into the 21st century.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
